Artemis, Greek goddess of the hunt

Artemis is the Greek goddess of the hunt, twin sister of Apollo and daughter of Zeus and Leto. She rules the moon and childbirth, motherhood and virginity, wild animals and hunters. She is best known for her association with the wilderness.

As a skilled archer, she is often depicted pursuing game in the forests, but she is also a protector of wild animals with a special affinity for creatures such as deer, bears, and boars. Her role as a guardian of wildlife reflects her connection to the untamed aspects of nature.

Artemis is one of the virgin goddesses in Greek mythology, along with Athena and Hestia. Her focus on independence and autonomy is a defining characteristic of her divine persona. She took an oath of chastity, and defended it with deadly force when necessary.

Actaeon, a hunter who happened upon her bathing in the river, was turned into a deer for his transgression and chased by his own hounds. She was just as fierce at defending her virginal followers—and meting out swift punishment to those who threatened them.
